Steam Turbine Shoot

leave a comment »

I have just returned from assisting a five day long very challenging industrial shoot. The shoot was of a steam turbine and the workers installing it. This led us to a coal power plant to where the turbine was being installed. It was hot, noisy, and there was a new way to die every direction you looked. There were pieces of equipment weighing many tons being moved overhead by cranes, pipes delivering high pressure steam, asbestos everywhere, and most dangerous to us, angry supervisors.

This shoot solidified my respect for the upmost transparency and communication with clients and location owners etc. The individuals on site who were in charge had not been communicated with beforehand making our jobs very difficult. In the end opportunities were missed and chances were lost due simply to unwillingness of some parties to communicate. In spite of these hurdles the photographer and the other assistant I was working with managed to work together very well and produce some fantastic imagery.
